Although farm diversification is currently high profile, helping farmers & landowners assess the possibilities and practicalities of converting their land & buildings to equestrian use has been our job for over 10 years now. Impartial advice is the real key because over the last few years suppliers of stabling, stable requisites, sand arenas and other equestrian products have started to suggest that they offer an advisory service, but this is naturally linked to selling their services. We have viewed yards in very rural areas with barns converted to stabling for 30 horses when the catchment area has a total usage of some 10 boxes, plus many farms are not suited to equestrian use! There is however serious potential in converting to invite horse owners to utilise the land and boost incomes. Expanding an existing yard can be a gamble. Here again we enter an area whereby profits can be good but losses can be high. It is often false economy to invest more money in some yards? Previously profitable yards can change to show weekly losses. Again this is often due to suppliers dangling the proverbial carrot and suggesting to spend more is to earn more?.
